Maria Charkina Ukrainian, b. 1999

Overview

Maria Charkina was born in Odesa, Ukraine, in 1999 and lives and works in Kyiv. She is a contemporary artist whose practice encompasses painting and installation.

Charkina’s work explores the psychological dimensions of lived experience and the ways in which inner trauma can alter our perception of reality, giving familiar objects new and unexpected meanings. Her visual language develops through an interplay between personal sensitivity and analytical observation. She engages with fragmented memory, distortions of time, and the changing relationship between the body and its surroundings shaped by personal experience.

Charkina graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv. Her work is characterized by a restrained palette, precise compositions, and a strong emotional presence. She frequently works with diptychs, using them to create visual dialogues between presence and absence, figuration and abstraction.

Charkina has participated in group exhibitions in Kyiv, Lviv, Berlin, and Warsaw, as well as presented solo projects in independent art spaces. She is a member of the “NOI” project at the Institute of Contemporary Art Studies.
