Andriy Boyarov Ukrainian, b. 1961

Overview

Andrij Bojarov was born in Lviv in 1961. He studied architecture at Lviv Polytechnic Institute from 1984 to 1989 and, from 1987, lived between Lviv, Tallinn, and Warsaw. During this period, he encountered artists and cultural figures who influenced the development of his artistic language.

Bojarov was among the early Lviv artists to experiment with conceptual photography and video art. His practice focuses on the appropriation and transformation of existing visual materials, including photographs, television footage, newspapers, magazines, and books. By removing images from their original contexts and reassembling them, he invites viewers to reconsider and reinterpret media representations of reality.

His artistic development was influenced by the Lviv artist Marion Ilku, a student of Roman Selskyi, as well as by his long-standing friendship with Estonian artist Tõnis Vint. During the 1990s and 2000s, Bojarov travelled extensively and collaborated with cultural institutions and media organizations in Estonia and Poland. He later returned to Lviv, where he became actively involved in the Ukrainian art scene.

His works have been exhibited at the Art Arsenal and the Lviv National Art Gallery, as well as in galleries and institutions in Ukraine and internationally. His work is also part of the Art Arsenal collection.
