Serhii Anufriev Ukrainian, b. 1964
Serhii Anufriev was born in Odesa in 1964. His practice encompasses painting, drawing, objects, installations, text, and other media. He is associated with the Odesa Conceptualist movement and is a co-founder of the artistic group Inspection “Medical Hermeneutics.”
Anufriev’s practice explores the relationships between image, text, language, and perception. His works often combine irony, absurdity, paradox, and linguistic play, allowing familiar images and situations to acquire new and unexpected meanings. The artist is interested in the ways meanings are constructed and in how viewers engage with open and ambiguous images.
An important aspect of his practice is his engagement with visual and verbal structures. Rather than offering a single interpretation, his works encourage attentive observation, associative thinking, and the discovery of connections between seemingly unrelated elements. In the 2010s, Anufriev developed the principles of “patternism,” exploring intuitive forms of artistic perception and alternative ways of constructing visual images.
