Volodymyr Kostyrko Ukrainian , 1967
Volodymyr Kostyrko is a Ukrainian artist, art critic, curator, collector, and interior designer based in Lviv. Born in 1967, he studied at the Ivan Trush School of Arts and Crafts and later at the Faculty of Art History at the Catholic University of Lublin.
Kostyrko’s artistic practice is rooted in the visual traditions of European art history, particularly medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque painting. He reworks their techniques, compositions, and iconography to construct new narratives about contemporary culture, history, and identity. Rather than simply reproducing historical aesthetics, he introduces irony and ambiguity, questioning established cultural myths and the ways they shape our understanding of the past and present.
His work spans painting, graphics, collage, assemblage, installation, and street art. A recurring focus of his practice is the mythology of Galicia and the cultural history of Lviv, which he approaches as material for reinterpretation rather than fixed heritage. By placing historical imagery in new contexts, Kostyrko creates a dialogue between different periods and challenges the boundaries between historical representation, fiction, and contemporary reality.
Alongside his artistic practice, he works as an interior designer and has developed a distinctive visual approach inspired by the Habsburg-era character of Lviv.
