John Giorno American, 1936-2019

John Giorno was a poet, performer, and artist who collapsed the boundaries between language, activism, and visual art over more than five decades. A central figure in the New York avant-garde, he was a close collaborator of Andy Warhol, William S. Burroughs, and Robert Rauschenberg, and founded Giorno Poetry Systems in 1965, a pioneering platform for distributing poetry through emerging media including telephone, radio, and recorded audio. His text-based works are characterized by repetition, accumulation, and the physical force of language, treating the poem as both a sculptural and political object. His work has been exhibited and performed at institutions worldwide, and his influence on the intersection of poetry, performance, and conceptual art remains enduring.
