Mario Garcia Torres

Mario García Torres (b. 1975, Monclova, Mexico) is a conceptual artist living between Mexico City and Los Angeles. He received a BFA from the Universidad de Monterrey in 1998 and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2005. Working across film, video, installation, sound, performance, painting, and text, his practice investigates the backstage of artistic production and the gaps in recent art history, often reenacting, reinterpreting, or revisiting forgotten events and figures from twentieth-century art and culture to blur the line between fact and fiction. In the early 2000s he stopped dating his works, using "n.d." in their titles as a way of resisting the narrative of a career as a linear, progressive evolution. He has participated in major international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale (2007), São Paulo Biennial (2010), Documenta 13 (2012), Berlin Biennale (2014), Manifesta 11 (2016), and Sharjah Biennial 13 (2017), and his work is held in public collections including MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, the Hammer Museum, and Museo Tamayo.
