Biography

Through the means of his artworks, Yuriy Sivirin arrives at a maximum resemblance to prints, thus, inverting popular attempts among contemporaries to use new media in order to create an analogue to classical painting. Citation is the main technique that determines the narratives of Sivirin’s works. By creating pieces that are filled with a variety of references, artist constructs a situation, whereby the viewer has an opportunity to experience his own awareness in history of art and to understand contemporary information space in general. Sivirin’s oeuvre is a coherent visual criticism of postmodernism: by processing systematically masses of visual information, artist chooses fragments and motifs for his works. Hence, for instance, a project “Bedtime stories” contains references of the ancient myth about Pandora and Andromeda, allusions to works of Rembrandt, Rubens, Giacometti, Bacon, borrowing techniques that are characteristic of Borremans’ aesthetic, etc.
