Susanne Clausen b. 1967
Overview
Susanne Clausen is a German/British artist and Professor of Fine Art at the University of Reading. Her practice centres on drawing and painting while extending into performance, installation, video, and curating. She frequently works through Szuper Gallery, a collaborative framework with Pavlo Kerestey, within which she develops interdisciplinary projects that combine moving image, scenographic installations, sculptural elements, recordings, and text.
Her recent work explores drawing and painting through processes of repetition, erasure, and sustained reworking of archival photographs, historical images, and found visual material. Alongside this, she produces hand-made figurative puppet sculptures that function as doubles within installations, video works, and live performances, addressing questions of mediation, representation, and displacement.
Her work has been presented internationally in museums, galleries, and artist-run contexts, including Voloshyn Gallery, Miami; Museum Strauhof, Zurich; Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art, Budapest; Western Front, Vancouver; Mackenzie Art Gallery Regina, Kunstmuseum Thun; Kunsthalle Helsinki and Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. She has received awards from Arts Council England, the Creative Europe, the Sasakawa Foundation, British Council, and was awarded the Abbey Fellowship at the British School at Rome in 2026. She is Director of Reading International.
