Voloshyn Gallery welcomes Abi Shehu!

Voloshyn Gallery is pleased to announce the representation of Abi Shehu, an Albanian multi-disciplinary visual artist whose work delves into fundamental existential experiences such as unconsciousness, death rituals, memory, and amnesia. Her artistic research is aptly described as an archaeology of the unconscious, aiming to uncover and portray the unrepresentable dimensions of people, societies, places, and historical events

Shehu, born in 1993 in Lezha, Albania, and currently based between Albania and Berlin, employs a variety of media including photography, video, sound, and installation art. Her work often features themes that explore the layered histories and perceptions of her homeland. Notably, Shehu has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Manifesta 14 in Prishtina and the "After the Mediterranean" exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in Menorca, where she engaged with the social and ecological challenges of the Mediterranean region.

Julia and Max Voloshyn, co-founders of Voloshyn Gallery, expressed their admiration for Shehu's “unique ability to merge historical context with contemporary existential questions. Her detailed exploration of memory and identity, combined with her innovative mixed-media approach, not only provokes thought but also connects with the collective unconscious.” They first presented her work during the gallery's 2023 exhibition "Further than Light or Language," curated by Lilia Kudelia at Miami space.

Abi Shehu's first solo project with the gallery will debut at the Liste Basel Art Fair 2024.
