George Sánchez-Calderón

Overview

George Sánchez-Calderón is a Miami-based artist recognized for his ambitious large-scale installations and event-based productions. His practice engages the audience with themes addressing the American Dream, the goals of Modernism and importance of context. Sánchez-Calderón often critiques utopian ideals by highlighting the disparities between intentions and their social realities, emphasizing the interaction between art, architecture, and the public. His exhibitions are an invitation for audiences to reconsider the built environment and its impact on community and identity. The documentation of his installations and actions defines a growing part of his practice and the two-dimensional work exhibited.

He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1995 and a Bachelors in Fine Arts degree with a focus on art history from Florida International University.
