Ugo Rondinone

Ugo Rondinone (born 1964 in Brunnen, Switzerland) is a Swiss-born, New York-based artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance, moving fluidly between mediums to create meditations on nature, time, and the human condition. After studying at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna from 1986 to 1990, he rose to international acclaim in the early 1990s, developing a body of work built around recurring, deceptively simple motifs, from his circular target-style paintings to his lit rainbow signs bearing poetic phrases. He represented Switzerland at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 and is perhaps best known to broader audiences for Seven Magic Mountains (2016–2021), a large-scale land art installation of vividly painted boulder totems outside Las Vegas. His work has been exhibited at major institutions worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, and the Petit Palais in Paris, and he continues to live and work in New York.
